Who knew a panel on weeding would be so packed?!
I attended because weeding is always at the bottom of our to-do list and I wanted to see what tips they might have to streamline the process. They touched briefly on CollectionHQ and highly recommended it (I've used it at another library), but also focused on old fashioned running reports, condition, etc. I only stayed for the Public Librarian to speak and then snuck out to attend another panel...
Some highlights from the short discussion:
Get, Set, Weed
- specific set of criteria
- weeding on a regular schedule or in response to an immediate need
- Organizational activity. Get everyone involved: esp the low hanging fruit
- Record your progress
MUSTIEs must go --
Get rid of books/materials that are...
Misleading and/or factually inaccurate
Ugly (worn out beyond repair)
Superseded by a new edition
Trivial (no discernable literary or scientific method)
Irelevant to the needs or interest of your community
Elsewhere – the material is easily obtainable from another library
CREWing E-Books
- Low use items
- Formats no longer compatible with the devices used
- Space
- Not current or accurate
- Fad titles
